We arrived by bus on a Sunday Morning in Assisi, the home of St. Francis.  The main attraction in this hillside town is the Basilica di San Francisco, which contains two churches, one above the other, and St. Francis' tomb in the basement.   Rita, whose last name is Assisi, simply had to visit - if we had found a place named Downs we would have gone there as well.

Assisi seemed to have more churches per acre than any of the other places we visited and in fact, churches were about the only thing to see (there is a fortress above the town that we missed).

This was a one day visit.  Early Monday morning we were on our way by train to Florence.
