Wind Organ

Andy & Staszek at the wind organ. (1992)

This wind organ is part of a memorial to communist soldiers killed in battle.  It is located on a hill in the village of Maniowy, not far from the Tatry mountains that form Polands southeastern border. I understand it was always controversial, and has fallen into disrepair since the communists left power.

The picture below shows the memorial inscription which has been vandalized.  Part of a word has been removed from the third line of text completely changing the meaning.  Originally it said something like:

For brave sons of the homeland who were killed in these mountains during the struggle to maintain communist power.

And that was changed to:

For brave sons of the homeland who were killed in these mountains during the struggle to bring down communist power.

The inscription at the base of the wind organ. Note that letters have been removed near the left end of the 3rd line.

The park now sits neglected. The wind organ is so badly rusted that we heard no sound from it even though the wind was blowing briskly during our visit.
