The Battleship USS Alabama (BB-60)

According to the printed "Visitor's Tour Guide", the USS Alabama was commissioned in November 1941.  She is 680 feet long and 108 feet wide and, when loaded, weighs as much as 90 million pounds.  She carried a crew of about 2,500 men.   Her engines produced 130,000 horsepower making a top speed of about 32MPH.  At half that speed, she had a range of 15,000 nautical miles.  I'd hate to have to pay for filling the fuel tanks.

She has 9 16inch guns,  20 5inch guns, 48 40mm guns, and 52 20mm guns.

A view of the plotting room from which the guns are aimed.   These analog computers look similar to the Mark 1A computers on the destroyer I served on. Ah, nostalga!

These are the 16 inch projectiles.  One man can lift a 5 inch projectile (around 50 pounds) but not these monsters.

This is a ships helm at one of several steering stations.   Note the small viewing port in the thick armor.  These stations were redundant so that if one or more were destroyed, the ship could still be steered.
